General Information about the building

History:

The earliest part of the building dates back to the 1860's with the final section completed in 1896. Have a look at the foundation stone by the front door – "William Urquart, Vice Chairman, London Fire Brigade Committee, July 15th, 1895".

Up until the 1980's it was a working Firestation. It even has the original "look out" tower that was used before telephones and cameras. In 1999 it was converted into 23 apartments.

There are 3 buildings within the Old Firestation namely "Kennington Firestation", "The Ladder House" and "The Officer's House".

Just across from the Firestation "The Water Tower" building is visible which served the Firestation during the early years before mains water was available across London.

The Old Court House building next door was where the infamous Kray twins were tried and sent to prison for life. The Old Court House now houses a Buddist centre, library and café.

The other building of local interest is the Old Victorian workhouse on Renfrew Road which is where Charlie Chaplin spent 5 years of his childhood. Within the Old workhouse now sits "The Cinema Museum". This gives a fascinating insight into the world of cinema as Charlie Chaplin himself would have known.
